Big Idea # 5,012: Learn to Sail the Open Waters

This new documentary chronicles the exploits of four young punkers who bought a boat, got it "seaworthy," learned to sail, and set off into the open waters. Many readers of this blog have had some epic trips and seen some crazy shit but this ain't a pissing contest so zip up your trousers.

These kids get props for pulling off a hell of a stunt and the doc really conveys how close to the edge they were at times, as well as that feeling of getting well outside your comfort zone and just trusting that you were going to make it out alive—and hopefully with some great stories.

The monotony and toil they experienced almost all hours of the day reminded me of cycling across country. What sounds like an idyllic jaunt down blue highways was what felt like almost constant work. Wake up before dawn, cook breakfast, ride, take a break and cook lunch, ride for a few more hours, set up camp and make dinner, pass out and repeat. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything and as bad as watching tornados closing in on your little boat in open water must have been I'm sure they'd do it all over again.
